Re: NYT reporter claims fingerprint requirement for firearm purchases is "common sense"
2In California you have to cough up your thumb print. It's on the 4473 form as I recall, the little square for the thumb print. Is it not like that in other states? Are there questions as dumb as that?

Re: NYT reporter claims fingerprint requirement for firearm purchases is "common sense"
5Yup, CA's thumb print is redundant after the first firearms purchase, we're already in their databases. A thumb print each time is like the 10 day waiting period each time we purchase a firearm. CA Democrats enacted it into law, because they can.
Common sense is one of those throwaway lines, anyone can use it for any situation. I'm sure dictatorships of the left and right use it freely.

9Actually, I see Forms 4473 all the time, working at the gun store. The Federal Form 4473 does not have space for fingerprints, nor provisions for them. That must be a state-specific thing, because our neighbors in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina don't have that, either.
Basically, that NYT "journalist", i. e. gun control advocate, is looking to track gun owners. That's exactly what Jim Crow gun control was about; track the "n****rs" who had guns so you could go house-to-house and confiscate them for whatever made-up reason. No, thanks.

11Every time I've purchased in CA, the FFL just turns over the 4473 and on the back of the last page they draw a circle and that is where the thumb print goes, no special box. I assume the FFL either scans and e-mails the 4473 to CA DOJ or snail mails it to Sacto.
I have out of state carry licenses that required full fingerprinting, for one license I rolled the finger prints my self. It seems draconian to require finger printing just to purchase a firearm.

14Full finger printing for military, government employment, security clearances and licensed occupations I understand, the feds and state have full sets of my prints. Casino's in Nevada have always required that job applicants have a "Sheriff's Card" showing a criminal background check. Many states now require child care workers also have a criminal background check.

15Sort of a tangent, but we're quickly getting past the days where this sort of thing is relevant. Forensic genetics have been a thing for decades, but now they're pulling samples straight out of the air. Ten years from now, between access to ancestry databases, AI, and environmental DNA sampling - they'll won't need your prints anymore. They'll be sniffing the air at the gun store.

16CA investigators used ancestry databases to narrow down suspects to find the Golden State Killer. They confirmed it by retrieving a discarded paper cup he used and made the DNA match. I expect China is working on a lot if ways to use DNA to help continue to enslave their population.wings wrote: Thu May 25, 2023 7:30 am Sort of a tangent, but we're quickly getting past the days where this sort of thing is relevant. 18Considering how the world is on the brink of war on many corners, now Serbia and Kosovo, I’m not that interested in supporting the idea of a gun registry which seems to be suggested by a few. I don’t have a problem with my fingerprints being on record for my carry license, but I don’t see a need to make it somehow mandatory on all gun purchases, or all people and pushing for a registry. That will not end well. I have no doubt fascists of all flavors would use it to disarm dissidents and anyone that doesn’t agree with them. No thanks here as well. We are on the fast track to redefining who in this country has rights and who does not. Anyone not seeing that, is a sleep.CowboyT wrote: Tue May 23, 2023 11:27 pm Actually, I see Forms 4473 all the time, working at the gun store. 19I agree, however the Democratic dominated CA Legislature long ago decided they wanted gun registration and a database available to law enforcement, so the "Automated Firearms System (AFS)" exists and we're listed along with wanted persons, those with a DV restraining order and other criminals. It's part of the CJIS (California Justice Information System) and it's often abused by sworn and non-sworn LE employees.sikacz wrote: Sun May 28, 2023 4:36 amConsidering how the world is on the brink of war on many corners, now Serbia and Kosovo, I’m not that interested in supporting the idea of a gun registry which seems to be suggested by a few. I've been fingerprinted once but I doubt it's on any computer file since it was back in the 70"s. Prolly on a card in a box. Actually the entire file should have been destroyed unless the government is lying.
