Two Alabama teenagers have been taken into custody and charged with murder in last week's shooting at a "Sweet 16" birthday party that left four dead and 32 wounded, a state police spokesperson said on Wednesday.

The suspects - Ty Reik McCullough, 17, and Travis McCullough, 16 - both from Tuskegee, were arrested and charged with four counts of reckless murder, Sergeant Jeremy Burkett of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said during a news conference. The shooting on Saturday took place at the Mahogany Masterpiece Dance Studio in Dadeville, a community of 3,200 people about 50 miles (80.47 km) northeast of Montgomery.

"Make no mistake. This is Alabama and when you pull out a gun and you start shooting people, we're going to put you in jail," Burkett said. "We're tired of going to mothers and having to tell them these kids aren't coming home."

Of the nine injured who were still hospitalized, five were in critical condition, Heidi Smith, a spokesperson for Lake Martin Community Hospital, said at a news conference on Monday.

At a press conference Wednesday, District Attorney Mike Segrest said the pair would be charged as adults and that prosecutors would ask a judge to hold them without bail. A bond hearing must be held by Friday under Alabama law.
ALEA Sgt. Jeremy J. Burkett wouldn’t say where the two suspects are being jailed, or whether they already were in custody when they were charged in the case. "We can’t get into a motive right now, because that would be part of an ongoing investigation," Burkett said. "We can’t share that."

Segrest said that grand jurors typically meet in Tallapoosa County in March and September, but he said he would recall grand jurors to seek an indictment before September. "If we can establish the facts, we will be asking our grand jury to come back in," he said.

Since they are technically minors 16 and 17, I figured they were being charged as adults since they published their names.

The poor families with dead and injured children. Glad they caught the shooters.

A third man, Wilson LaMar Hill Jr., 20, of Auburn, was arrested Wednesday afternoon and faces the same charges, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency announced.

The teen brothers are being charged as adults, District Attorney Mike Segrest said. The suspects will get a bond hearing within 72 hours, and the state plans to request no bond, officials said.

Reckless murder is a Class A felony with a punishment range of 10 to 99 years in prison. In Alabama, juveniles 16 and older are automatically charged as adults for such felonies.

Any word on where they got their guns?

Haven't heard anything about the guns used. There are 6 now in custody, the last one arrested is 15 years old, so his name hasn't been released. Looks like they're all from Tuskegee, AL about 30 miles south. ALEA isn't releasing much info and nothing is leaking from state and federal investigators. They're still going through witness statements.

Police might not ever get all the witness statements.
“We still truly believe that everybody that was at the venue that night has not come forward, and we have not had an opportunity to interview them,” Burkett said.

That's a shame. I assume there was drug use and those who attended don't want to pass along video of that to ALEA. ALEA should stress they are there only there to investigate the murders and shooting. Attendees might also be afraid of others in Tuskegee where the shooters came from.

The State Bureau of Investigations revealed new details about the onslaught of gunfire, which killed four people and injured 32 others at a Dadeville birthday party. Investigator Jesse Thornton spent about an hour testifying at an Aniah's Law hearing for five of six suspects in the April 15 incident.
During his testimony, Thornton revealed that 89 gunshots were fired by seven guns inside the Mahogany Dance Studio packed with 50-60 people. Thornton says they believe six of the guns were fired by the six defendants and victim, Corbin Holston. In fact, Thornton testified that some witnesses claimed Holston was wearing a ski mask and fired the first shots.

All the weapons used were handguns, but they believe two of them had been modified with illegal Glock switches, which allow them to fire like an automatic weapons. So far, only two weapons have been recovered from the shooting scene. Thornton said Holston's 9mm pistol was lying on his chest. The other pistol was found in victim Marsiah Collins' waistband, but was never fired, Thornton said. The investigator pointed out that all of the charged suspects knew each other and most met before and after the shooting.

Judge Clayton Taylor told all parties he will rule in the next 24-48 hours whether or not the defendants will be denied bond. [DA] Segrest says he plans to file a petition to prosecute the 15-year-old supect as an adult as well.
