Russia stops sharing information about nuclear forces with the U.S.

1
A senior Russian diplomat said Moscow had suspended sharing information about its nuclear forces with the United States, including notices about missile tests.

Sergei Ryabkov, Russia's deputy foreign minister, said in remarks carried by news agencies that Moscow had halted all information exchanges with Washington after previously suspending its participation in the last remaining nuclear arms pact with the U.S.

Last month, Russian president Vladimir Putin suspended the New START treaty, saying Russia could not accept U.S. inspections of its nuclear sites under the agreement at a time when Washington and its Nato allies had openly declared Russia’s defeat in Ukraine as their goal.

Moscow emphasized that it was not withdrawing from the pact altogether and would continue to respect the caps on nuclear weapons.

The Russian foreign ministry initially said Moscow would keep notifying the U.S. about planned test launches of its ballistic missiles, but Ryabkov’s statement reflected a change of course.

“There will be no notifications at all,” Ryabkov said when asked if Moscow would also stop issuing notices about planned missile tests.

No they won't. putin using ANY nuke will certainly NOT end this conflict. Ya know, the US and NATO has more than a few tactical nukes at their disposal also. At the Naval War College, we war-gamed tactical nukes many times in a variety of scenarios and it ALWAYS escalated to a global nuclear exchange.

It was NOT our main power calculus in WW2..not even close. Japan WAS going to surrender..It was a matter of troops on the ground, invading Japan or nukes..either way the Allied powers held all the cards. A little historical research about the end of WW2 and the resulting nuke politics 'might' be in order...

Used it on Japan twice, at the end of a global, all out war, over 70 years ago, before deterence or MAD was even thought of...and that means russia will use a tactical nuke in Ukraine...ridiculous..Besides, this war is VERY spread out, on a variety of fronts. If putin nukes Kiev, he will lose most of his black sea fleet in the next minutes or hours, plus a large part of his forces in eastern Ukraine. putin has very little communications, or intel now. NO air superiority...nuking anybody will spell putin's downfall, and he knows it. . ...Then, the already weakened putin will have to decide if a global nuke exchange is worth it..and the utter destruction of russia, along with everybody else.

I hope you are correct. What scares me is if Putin decided, that since he is losing, he will order the destruction of the Ukraine and mother Russia similar to what Hitler ordered at the end of WWII in Germany. This was when the scorch earth order was given by him to destroy Germany because they didn't deserve to survive without him.

Putin suspended New START participation, he didn't pull out of the treaty. Inspections were canceled on both sides during Covid for reasons, by mutual consent. Not sharing info is meant as psychological pressure against political leaders in Europe, that's all. DoD isn't fazed because they know what Putin knows.

New START limits how many warheads we put on missiles too. Pulling out of the treaty puts Putin in greater danger, not less.

The WWII example is instructive but in a very different way. It shows us that the only use of nuclear weapons is asymmetric, either used against states that do not have them, or to blackmail them. Like how W wanted tac nuke bunker busters to go after NK before they started testing. Nobody wants a showdown in the no-man's land.

Putin is cornered, no doubt. He has no offramp. Certainly not the orange turd's 'solution'...give large chunks of Ukraine to his BFF. As if Zelensky would agree to that.
BUT, I don't think putin is as irrational and as physically declining as hitler was in his final days. Losing in Ukraine isn't the end of mother russia, as it was with Nazi Germany under Hitler.

I agree with wings, I think it's more of Putin's brinkmanship games, trying to stop the West from providing aid to Ukraine. HIs threats just energize even more the former Iron Curtain countries now in NATO. There are still plenty of people in those countries who remember living under Soviet/Russian domination post WWI, never again.
