Yes, the European Economic Community (now the EU), the European Coal and Steel Community and EurAtom. It was the Inner Six and the Outer Seven (European Free Trade Association) which included the UK.

It was 9 by 1976, but still 3 communities with the same memberships and the same High Commission for all 3 communities. Unifying them into the EU was a logical step.

It had the goal of bringing peace and prosperity to Europe after two world wars and it succeeded. EU countries are prosperous, but EU actions require the agreement of all members and Hungary and Poland have anti-democratic elements in their governments. Putin's war of aggression in Ukraine scares many EU and NATO members especially Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. And EU but not yet NATO members, Finland and Sweden.

Yet, US and NATO support for this war of aggression by russia toward Ukraine is 'short sighted' according to some(here)..but a similar move against Finland would be a disaster if the US and NATO didn't come to Finland's aid.
