Good evening everyone. So Cal member here. New to the club and forum, but not new to firearms (although really rusty). Planning on doing a lot of off-the-grid camping in the coming months/years, and realized it was time to look for home/camp protection options again. Glad to see this group available, as would love to avoid the typical right wing gun nuts as much as possible. It's really been a breath of fresh air to view the videos with member discussions, helpful guides, etc. Looking forward to interacting with the community.

3Howdy and welcome from Houston! Lots advice and recommendations here when you want it!
Re: Greetings from So Cal
4Hey there SubRosa. I just purchased a Kimber 1911- Stainless TLE II, but won't be picking it up until next week. I also have a SP2022 on hold for next month (in CA you can only purchase one handgun every 30 days).
I have in the past owned a Beretta 92, which I took to the range quite a bit, and had quite a few rifles and shotguns I inherited from my Grandfather, which I never fired (ended up selling them all at the time). I'm about to get back into it now.
Re: Greetings from So Cal
5Welcome. Always wondered how good those Kimbers are.

Re: Greetings from So Cal
6I'll be finding out in about 8 days. I'll make sure to post my first impressions of the gun once I've had a chance to put some rounds through it.tonguengroover wrote: Mon Aug 15, 2022 12:01 am Welcome. Always wondered how good those Kimbers are.

8Another Howdy from Houston!
If you're going "Off-Grid" camping, might I suggest taking along a long gun? A light weight carbine might fit the bill, like a Ruger MINI 14. Unless you want to get a Big Black Scary Rifle like an AR? LOL

Re: Greetings from So Cal
9My view of carbine’s for camping is to go with a PCC so you can share ammo with the pistol. The purpose is probably safety and convenience, not necessarily a cartridge for ethically hunting larger game, right?

10Hey there, and thanks for the suggestion. Here in CA, most of the Off Grid camping is still in areas where there are a lot of other Overlanders around. Not as remote or desolate for the most part, and many of the forums I've visited recommend smaller arms for ease of use, etc. But I'll for sure be adjusting my focus the more we get out there and see what things are really like.FlyGuy wrote: Mon Aug 15, 2022 6:43 am Another Howdy from Houston!

11Hi from NJ. A Kel-Tec Sub 2000 is the perfect PCC rifle to carry while camping--if it can be made Cal-Legal. The Multi-Mag version can handle all kinds of mags with just a $12 replacement latch. Folds to 16" and weighs 4.5#. Mine is set up for Beretta 92fs mags, but I have the adapter for Sig P320 mags.whitestrobephoto wrote: Mon Aug 15, 2022 2:30 pmHey there, and thanks for the suggestion. I suppose a lot depends on where you're going and how you're going to get there. I don't know that a carbine will be worth the relative inconvenience anywhere in the southern part of the state. OTOH, I remember tales from a couple of guys living off grid up towards Shasta, had a bear raid their campsite after their dog had puppies. Long guns recommended there. Then again, they had a semi-permanent site with a trailer.

Imagine a 9mm would just antagonize the bear. Bear spray might even be better than a pistol round.

14Yeah, we're going to be carrying Bear Spray for sure, and the more I read the more it seems that the best option to protect from any wildlife (we would only potential encounter Black Bears or Mountain Lions, and both are easily scared off). Being armed would just be for peace of mind for anything else that might happen.Bisbee wrote: Mon Aug 15, 2022 7:18 pm Living full-time in the woods? Yeah, 30-06...
