Blog - So you want to do something, anything (Part 1)

In the wake of yet another mass shooting, as we noted in a previous blog post, the two camps are predictably settling into the usual corners of “Control all the guns” and “Shall not be infringed”. Maybe this time will be different. Maybe it could be different. What is one that we could pass that should be an absolute no brainer, sailing through the house, senate, and office of the President? Keeping guns out of the hands of domestic abusers and animal abusers is one. As Beau notes in his video here.

While technically domestic violence convictions preclude someone from purchasing a gun, the definition and enforcement is sorely lacking. There’s always talk of loopholes in the law, and in this case, it’s absolutely accurate. Expand the definition to include all family members, domestic partners, boyfriends, etc. Incentivize states to expand the reporting of those convictions through federal legislation. Include animal cruelty convictions. Why? 60% of mass shootings have a history of or are the act of domestic violence. Who in their right mind would not want to keep wife beaters from owning guns? Let’s get it done.

You're right. Both political parties put poison pills in bills hoping the other side misses them, until they become law. In general I'm averse to simplistic solutions to very complex problems.
