'Breathtaking stupidity': Trump critics stunned by his 'genocidal' plan to ship COVID patients to Guantánamo

1
According to a bombshell report in the Washington Post, Donald Trump suggested shipping Americans infected with COVID-19 to Guantánamo as the pandemic began to spread across the United States.

Based upon the book "Nightmare Scenario: Inside the Trump Administration's Response to the Pandemic That Changed History," by the Post's Yasmeen Abutaleb and Damian Paletta, the report states, "In the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, as White House officials debated whether to bring infected Americans home for care, President Donald Trump suggested his own plan for where to send them, eager to suppress the numbers on U.S. soil," with Trump asking aides, "Don't we have an island that we own? What about Guantánamo? We import goods. We are not going to import a virus."

The report notes that the ex-president's aides were "stunned" by his suggestion -- and it was quickly dropped.

Equally stunned were critics of the one-term president as the report spread on Twitter, with one commenter calling out Trump for his "genocidal callousness."

Not surprised that trump the traitor didn't know we didn't 'own' Cuba..don the dope probably didn't know Guantanamo was on Cuba.

When you're a psychopath, the only life that's real to you is your own. Everyone else is a pawn to be used, abused, cast aside, or destroyed. Other people's lives are no more real to him than life size cardboard cut-outs. This is why 1/2 million died from Covid who didn't need to die if he had done the ONE JOB he had: To keep Americans safe. His focus was always on (trying) to control the PERCEPTION, not the reality. He told Bob Woodward early on that he held back on PPE and other actions because....he wanted to make the governors of the Blue states that were infected first "unpopular".

As a result, 63,000 are dead in Cal, 53,000 dead in NY, 26,000 dead in NJ, etc, mostly in the early days of the pandemic.

Murdered by Trump. Deliberately, just like Stalin deliberately starved over a million Ukrainians to death in the 20s and 30s.

Voters have such short memories and politicians are experts at deflecting and blaming their opponents. Trump was full of shit from day one and he contaminated HHS, CDC and FDA which are normally not partisan, no matter which party controls the federal government. Cuomo and Newsom made plenty of mistakes starting with not protecting the most vulnerable in nursing facilities and not testing and sequencing enough.

I'd like so see John M Barry of Tulane, who wrote the definitive book on the 1918 Pandemic write a book on this one, but we're probably still too close to it and Barry is in his mid 70s.

Can't argue with any of that. I expect how to handle the nursing homes was in the Obama Pandemic Plan that Trump dumpstered because it had "Obama" on it. As his niece, Mary Trump, wrote in her book, all he had to do was take it off the shelf, hand it off to the relevant people and say "Do This" and he most likely would have been re-elected.

We are not in any way, shape, or form done with this pandemic and it's a mistake to think so. Looking at the state by state numbers of new cases and deaths, and the totally out of control raging abroad, especially in India and Brazil, shows me VERY disturbing potential for a new, even deadlier wave. Tiny upticks in states like Florida, easily the worst performing of the Big Four, are worrisome. So far, the vaccines are working even against the new mutations....but only so far. If the "spikes" on the virus mutate further, the vaccines and anti-bodies may no longer be effective. And this virus mutates thousands of times faster in a year than humans have since we separated from the other great apes.

And we need to remember that the 1918/1919 flu pandemic SEEMED to have been controlled, but it was the 1919 version that did most of the killing. IOW, it's far to early for Prof. Barry to be finishing a book on this one.

In the hyper partisan environment in 2019-2020 I have no doubt Trump and his people tossed a lot of good pandemic planning documents from Obama and even earlier administrations. The vaccines do seem to be holding for now, much will depend on the variants that come after the Indian and Brazilian ones. Biden is releasing our stockpile.

The CDC and states will be looking at the breakthrough infections, those vaccinated who test positive for COVID.
Nearly 4,000 fully vaccinated people in Massachusetts have tested positive for COVID-19, according to recent data from the state Department of Public Health.

The number of breakthrough cases in the state has been infrequent so far -- accounting for approximately one in 1,000 vaccinated people.

As of June 12, there were 3,791 coronavirus cases among the more than 3.7 million fully vaccinated individuals in Massachusetts, reports said.
"We’re learning that many of the breakthrough infections are asymptomatic or they’re very mild and brief in duration," said Boston University infectious diseases specialist Davidson Hamer, according to the Boston Herald. "The viral load is not very high."

Despite being fully vaccinated back in February, I had a scare a few weeks ago with several of the symptoms. So I got the PCR test at my local CVS and bought 4 of the 20 minute test kits--5 minutes of setup and collection, and 15 minutes for the B/T connected processor to get results. Both, thankfully came up negative.

There were colossal failures during the pandemic that had nothing to do with Trump...It was going to be a train wreck even if the White House did everything right. But then Trump was Trump and the Train wreck turned into a burning train wreck that someone tried to put out with jet fuel.

Sure there were. But there were other nations facing similar problems who acted correctly and drastically reduced their infection and death rates. In fact, only 2 nations with over 10 million in population have a higher infection rate / million: Czechia and Sweden (the latter of the dumbest experiment on the planet.)
In death rates we rank 10th of nations with over 10 million.

Yesterday Sweden's Social Democratic minority government fell in a "no confidence motion", the first time in Swedish history. It wasn't over COVID, it was over housing subsidies and a coalition partner voted against the Social Democrats. We'll see if it's the demise of the Social Democrats who didn't enforce a quarantine or even mask or distancing requirements during the pandemic, their elderly population were the main victims.
Close to half the adult population [in Sweden] has received at least one vaccine shot but the health agency warned that people who had only received one shot were less protected against the delta variant.

"There are some dark clouds on the horizon and I think mainly of outbreaks of the delta variant. It is found in Europe and also locally in Sweden," agency director general Johan Carlson told a news conference.

The Delta variant, first identified in India, is believed by UK epidemiologists to be 60% more transmissible than the Alpha variant which was previously dominant in Britain, in part because vaccines are less effective against it.

So far, only 71 cases of the variant have been confirmed in Sweden but it has prompted the agency to step up contact tracing. The delta variant accounts for around 90% of new cases in the UK.

Sweden has a population of about 10 million and has the same vaccine reluctance as the rest of the world.

That's what you get when you elect a president whose party platform is... "The absolute opposite of anything they do or say".

Which is precisely why he was always on the hot seat. More often than not, what the Democrats were saying was the right thing to do. So doing the opposite was a sure fire way to ensure a single term administration. Populism only gets you so far...at some point you have to show a modicum of competence... And Trump just didn't have it.

Reading reports of all the extraordinary measures made to save turd during his CV19 event was reminiscent of one running over a rattlesnake on a backroad, then taking said snake to a vet to save it's life. CV19 failed in it's effort, same as the GWB pretzel, however CV19 did help prevent his reelection. It's unfortunate we still have to contend with this bag of pus and his rabble for evermore.
To add insult to injury, our illustrious guv will be kissing turds ass today at the Texas border. I suspect the other two twits plus Cornyn and Cruz will attend the ass kissing event. Abbott has raised $600K in donations (good for about 2-3 ft. of wall) for his 'new' border wall venture. I'm hoping he bankrupts a few dumbassed donors.

American carnage: What we are now learning about Trump's nightmarish mishandling of COVID

There are a lot of books coming out over the next few months that chronicled the final days of the Trump administration and it's pretty clear there are a lot of stories to tell. Of course, there is also a burning desire on the part of some members of Trump's entourage to buff up their severely tarnished reputations.

Michael Wolff of "Fire and Fury" fame has a new book coming out about the post-election period called "Landslide" that sounds as though it will be as lurid and gossipy as his previous Trump book. ABC News correspondent Jonathan Karl's book called "Betrayal" (which I referenced in this piece about Bill Barr on Monday) appears to take a look at the same period as another new book by Wall Street Journal reporter Michael Bender called "Frankly, We Did Win This Election: The Inside Story of How Trump Lost." It makes sense that there would be a number of books about the election, Trump's Big Lie and the subsequent nsurrection. The assault on democracy is the biggest political story of our time and it's still unfolding.

But I think the most serious story of the Trump administration and granted, it's hard to choose, has to be the massive, overwhelming failure to deal with the COVID pandemic that's killed over 600,000 people and counting. I still can't quite wrap my mind around that number or the fact that the leadership of the United States of America was so inept. According to yet another new book, aptly entitled "Nightmare Scenario: Inside the Trump Administration's Response to the Pandemic That Changed History," it was all actually much worse than we even thought.

The authors, Washington Post reporters Yasmeen Abutaleb and Damian Paletta, tell the coronavirus story from the perspective of the science advisers as well as the political people around Trump who were desperately trying to get him to take the problem seriously. We knew from Bob Woodward's earlier reporting that Trump had consciously made the decision to "downplay" the virus, ostensibly to keep people from panicking. Nobody really believed that, of course. It was obvious that he was "downplaying" the virus because he was afraid that the stock market would panic and that the ensuring economic turmoil would cost him the election. It seemingly never even occurred to him that mass deaths might be a bigger drag on his campaign.

The earliest unforgettable moment in the saga was the day when Trump went down to the CDC and bragged that everyone there was so impressed by his grasp of the complexities that perhaps he should have been a scientist instead of a president. And he made the comment that would guide the entire response from that point forward:

According to "Nightmare Scenario" Trump was so upset by the idea that these people would "double his numbers" that he asked his staff if there wasn't "an island we own" that we could send them to and he asked more than once about the possibility of sending them to Guantánamo. The staff finally got the idea scuttled but because they were all just as shallow and self-serving as he was, they did it not because it was grotesquely inhumane but because they were "worried about a backlash over quarantining American tourists on the same Caribbean base where the United States holds terrorism suspects." They had a point. Sending sick old people to a terrorist prison camp is pretty bad optics.

The "numbers" continued to anger Trump. He demanded that the officials who allowed the cruise passengers into the US be fired (it didn't happen) and when he said at his infamous Tulsa Oklahoma rally back in June of 2020, "when you do testing to that extent, you're gonna find more cases. So I said to my people, slow the testing down please" — he was not joking. The book quotes Trump having a tantrum over the phone to Health and Human Services Director Alex Azar, saying "Testing is killing me! I'm going to lose the election because of testing! What idiot had the federal government do testing?" (Azar replied, hilariously, "Uh, do you mean Jared?")

This response was a trainwreck in every way, mostly because of Trump's ignorance which made his decisions erratic and ineffectual, which I suspect also led to the magical thinking that had him demanding that everyone be a cheerleader and if you just tell people that everything is fine, it will be. He's quoted as saying to his team, "I am sick and tired of how negative you all are. . . . I spend half of my day responding to what Tony Fauci has to say, and I'm the president of the United States!" He told Dr. Deborah Birx, "Every time you talk, I get depressed. You have to stop that."

Perhaps the biggest revelation in this book is the fact that Trump was much, much sicker from COVID than we knew. His doctors were seriously afraid he was going to die and pushed the FDA to break all the rules to get him the experimental drugs that might save him. As we know, they did that and pumped him full of steroids and he recovered quite quickly. But in one of the more eye-rolling moments in this story, apparently, some of the advisers like CDC Director Robert Redfield, assumed his very close brush with death would automatically force him to take the COVID protocols more seriously and go out and tell people about his own experience in order to convince them to do the same. That's just laughable. It would mean he had to admit he was wrong and that's impossible. You'll recall that he defiantly ripped off his mask when he returned to the White House and then made a video telling everyone to go out and live their lives. He promised that he was going to make those experimental drugs available for free to everyone. That didn't happen, although he did arrange for his cronies Chris Christie and Ben Carson to get them.

This book reinforces the story that we already knew which is that the death toll in the U.S. from the pandemic is so high largely because the president of the United States at the time was an incompetent narcissist who was incapable of handling the crisis. So instead he said it was all bad press and poor optics and tried to happy talk his way out of it. It ended up killing people. A lot of people. Despite his desire to be seen as the man who single-handedly created the vaccines and saved the world, his followers heard him "downplay" the virus and they believed him. Now many of them are refusing to get the shots and Trump's American carnage continues to this day.

He and his lackeys should be held responsible for all the deaths. Not just for not doing what should have been done medically, but also for spreading outright lies and disinformation causing more deaths. What he and his lackeys have done is "Crimes Against Humanity". Try them and upon conviction, let them walk up the stairs with thirteen steps.
