Blog - Governor Gavin Newsom versus Governor Ronald Reagan

1
The current Governor of California had this praise for the former Governor of California: “The modern gun safety movement started here first in a bipartisan way, by the way. May 2, 1967, there were 30 members of the Black Panthers that stormed the state capitol. Interestingly, on so many levels, it led a Republican legislator in the assembly to move forward with the state and one of the nation’s first gun safety laws signed by then Ronald Reagan.” Lets unpack this. At the time, the SacBee called it an “invasion” but here’s their own reporting: “Two dozen armed Negroes entered the state Capitol at noon today and 10 made their way to the back of the Assembly Chamber before they were disarmed and marched away by the state police. … After the state police questioned the men, they returned the weapons to them because the intruders had broken no law.” Read the full story above, but I want you to look at the language the press used in 1967. Intruders. Invasion. A familiar refrain. The reason the Panthers showed up to protest that day? The legislature working to pass the Mulford Act, which was a direct response to black people being armed. The Mulford Act was NOT in response to this protest, despite the revisionist history the current Governor is attempting to push. And the “storming of” the capitol (which seems to have ended more peacefully than some other events given the same description) seemed to have ended with the Panthers being disarmed, escorted out, and then released. That’s what Governor Newsom is celebrating. The California legislature of the 1960’s passing an explicitly racist law targeting the black community for having the audacity to try to protect themselves from those who would do them harm. Some news footage from the time:

White people, afraid of black people. In a time of Black resistance to heedless and unaccountable police violence, CA gun control got started. In recognition of the current crisis of unaccountable racist police violence, CA will do more of the same, in order to show that’s still who runs the state. Makes you wonder if maybe with someone who doesn’t think “Reagan had some good ideas” might be better for California. All gun control is racist. Consider supporting National African American Gun Association.

Yup, armed black men really upset the Republicans and Democrats running CA in 1967. Newsom got elected in 2018 in part because of his gun initiatives and I assume guns will again be a campaign issue for him in 2022. The glacial way that the federal courts move, Benitez's rulings could still be at the 9th Circuit which is where Rob Bonta wants them. After all Bonta was appointed as AG by Newsom replacing Becerra.
