Ohio police shoot and kill teenage girl who called for help just as Derek Chauvin guilty verdict is handed down

A 15-year-old Ohio teen was shot and killed Tuesday when a fight broke out in her foster home. Just as the guilty verdict against Derek Chauvin, police killed her.

"Authorities said they received a call at 4:35 p.m about a reported stabbing on the 3100 block of Legion Lane," said the Columbus Dispatch. "The caller identified the person with a knife as a female," but gave no other details and hung up.

"Hazel Bryant told The Dispatch that she is the aunt of the 15-year-old girl who was shot," said the report. "The girl lived in a foster home there on Legion Lane and got into an altercation with someone else at the home, she said."

Her aunt said that the teen wasn't holding a knife when police shot her and that she was the one who called the police for help.

"We don't get to celebrate nothing," said protester K.C. Taynor after the Chauvin verdict. "...In the end, you know what, you can't be Black."

Ohio cops say 'blue lives matter' after colleague shoots and kills teenage girl

Crowds are growing in Columbus, Ohio Tuesday night after police shot and killed a teenager.

Ma'Khia Bryant is the name of the girl who was reportedly in an altercation with another kid in her foster care home when she quickly rushed to call the police for help saying a woman had a knife, according to her aunt. She hung up and rushed back outside.

Outside of the scene, a small group of people stood. Police tape was stretched around a home with the officers standing behind it. That was when the officers behind the tape told the group, largely people of color, "blue lives matter."

"Paula Bryant tells me her 16-year-old daughter Ma'Khia Bryant was an honor roll student and a sweet child," said reporter Lacy Crisp.

Columbus officials released body-camera footage Tuesday night that shows a police officer firing four shots at Bryant after she rushes towards another woman with a knife.

If you watch the body cam, you'll see that the deceased girl had a knife, attacked one girl along with some guy who was kicking the first victim while she was down (the guy should be charged IMO!), then the deceased refused to drop the knife while raising it and moving to attack another girl, all in the LEO's presence, so, good shoot, which likely saved the other two girls at minmum from serious bodily injury or death.

https://youtu.be/T3rAhT2lm8A?t=260
The video shows an officer approaching a driveway with a group of young people standing there. In the video, it appears that the 16-year-old, identified now as Ma’Khia Bryant, who was moments later shot by police, pushes or swings at a person, who falls to the ground.

Bryant then appears to swing a knife at a girl who is on the hood of a car, and the officer fires his weapon what sounds like four times, striking Bryant, who died a short time later.

“It’s a tragic day in the city of Columbus. It’s a horrible, heartbreaking situation,” Mayor Andrew J. Ginther said. “We felt transparency in sharing this footage, as incomplete as it is at this time” was critical.

Franklin County Children’s Services confirmed on Tuesday night that the girl killed was 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant and that she was in foster care and in the custody of Children’s Services.

Police received a 911 call at 4:35 p.m. about an attempted stabbing on the 3100 block of Legion Lane, which is located north of Chatterton Road. The caller reported a female was trying to stab them, then the caller hung up.
Obviously who knows what went on before LE arrived, but that doesn't matter when it comes to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon/attempted murder in a LEO's presence. It was his duty to protect the public and stop the criminal from endangering others.

This looked like some sort of family/neighborhood beef that as usual got out of hand and escalated etc?

It should be noted that while there are bad cops, there are a lot more good ones, and every incident has it's own unique attributes. Jumping to conclusions sans evidence does no one any good, and the MSM should learn this as well.

That report is similar to what I've read, police were called to the scene because of a fight and the 16 year old was brandishing a knife. Looking at the video the 16 year old was lunging to stab the girl in pink. The case needs to be fully investigated. Not every police shooting is a bad one.

Local reports are that the victim had called the police after being assaulted by multiple assailants, and was defending herself with the knife at the time she was shot.

If you think it was a 'good shoot," Kyle Rittenhouse should have been shot. If you think Rittenhouse should be walking free, then Ma'Khia should still be alive. I don't believe there's ever such a thing as a "good shoot." But there's a hell of a double standard here and it's racist to the core.

Also worth considering that the girl was at her own residence, was defending herself against more than one attacker, and was the one who called the police for assistance. Where does the Castle Doctrine stand on this (if it exists in this state).

I don’t think the police did right here. But I’m just armchairing.

So what happens when police just start quitting in droves? This was a no win situation. He probably thought he was saving someone else from being stabbed. What happens if he lets the girl in pink get stabbed to death? Im not sure why anyone would want to be a police officer at this point. Just abandon the cities and get jobs in the suburbs and further out. So now Columbus Ohio is going to burn?

Personally, if I was at my house or the house of a family member and also afraid enough of an assailant that I would call for law enforcement, I would take cover and not be out in the driveway trying to defend myself by the time law enforcement eventually arrived.

If you watch the video in slow motion, you will see that the officer saved the girl in pink's life. Im not sure why that's not being noted by Lebron James or the media. That was large knife she was using. The officer acted to save the other lady's life. If he had not acted the other lady would have had her throat cut.

Edit: My wife just asked "Why didnt he shoot her in the leg?" I get tired of hearing people ask crap like that. Sounds like when Biden wanted to know why we didnt shoot people in the leg.

Police also released two 911 calls about the disturbance. It was not clear who made the calls or whether Bryant was a caller.
Public Safety Director Ned Pettus Jr. said at a news conference Wednesday that video of the encounter raises questions.

"The video shows that there is more to this. It requires us to pause, to take a close look at the sequence of events and, though it's not easy, wait for the facts as determined by an independent investigation," Pettus said.

"We have to ask ourselves: What information did the officer have? What did he see? How much time did he have to assess the situation? And what would have happened had he taken no action at all?" he said.

OK, let's have it your way...

Scenario: A armed criminal was endangering multiple lives while committing multiple felonies in this officer's presence, and the officer from a distance has to act in a split-second to save a life or lives? The criminal's age has no bearing once they arm themselves and present deadly force to others, and all the dispatcher gave to the responding officer was an address and a caller who said people are going to be/or were already stabbed or something similar and hung up. When the officer arrived it was obvious who the aggressor was as it's on his body cam video, and he had no time to do anything but to immediately react to save lives.

NOTE: What happened prior to the officer responding doesn't matter to the responding officer when he pulls up, just what he is witnessing in real-time. Any prior events will be noted in the investigation, and be applied after the fact.

a) What's racist about it aside from the armed criminal was black, and the intended victims both white/hispanic and black, while the officer white?

b) What would you have done in this officer's place?

1) Watch the deceased girl and the guy who was fighting with her kill or seriously injure two girls at minimum?
2) Go hands-on with the stabber after she kills or seriously injures at minimum one person?
3) Attempt to aim for her leg which would not have stopped the knife attack immediately unless bone was broken assuming you hit it?
4) I'm not sure what the range was regarding less-lethal possibilities, though depending on the victim's toxicology tasers are at times ineffective while center-mass shot placement typically isn't, and in this case the split-second goal was to stop a knife attack and save live(s)?

NOTE: When deadly force is presented in any officer's presence, against the officer(s) themselves or the public, officers are certainly within their bounds to meet it with the same, this is the law and how they're trained, and if it was you who was about to be stabbed you'd no doubt sing a different tune!

c) Yes, there is a double standard with regards to the Rittenhouse case, as he should've been arrested at the scene, though it'll be the courts that get to decide on whether he was defending himself (which he has a decent case for...), and all of the other crimes he committed just being there armed at his age etc.

He shouldn't have been there armed at all, and he and his mom should answer for that IMO as I believe she bought him the AR before he was 18, though it all started when he tried to put a dumpster fire out. According to witnesses Rittenhouse was attacked by multiple rioters after that (not the many peaceful protesters who were also there as well, there is a difference!).

There is video of two of the attackers, one of them armed with a handgun, being shot by Rittenhouse after he was chased and knocked to the ground, almost having his head removed by a swung skateboard, so for those two incidents Rittenhouse has a decent case for self-defense. I'm not sure about the first shooting, though reports from witnesses are that he was backed into a corner by multiple rioters after using the fire extinguisher on the burning dumpster, but I don't believe there is video of that shooting, so anything goes with that one?

However, anyone who can't see the facts of the stabbing case is blinded by rage (as was the deceased!), and they should be aware that crying racism when there isn't any evidence of it harms the BLM movement (crying wolf too often etc...), and strengthens the racist groups that do exist withinin law enforcement and the general population that the BLM movement is trying to overcome.

EVERY EVENT IS UNIQUE, and needs to be judged on it's own facts and merits!

"THE FACTS MATTER", and in this case when it's obvious on body cam video, and confirmed by neighbors who the armed aggressor was, it's an open and shut case, i.e. a good shoot (and technically speaking, a hell of a job considering the target of the stabber was in extremely close proximity to the stabber!).

Finally, "good shoot" is a legal/technical term as no shooting is a good shooting, and yes it's tragic that a young girl lost her life over a moment of rage, and sadly so easily avoided by controlling that rage, but every person has responsibilities to themselves and others, and one's actions can have repercussions.

This
OK, what facts do you need that you don't already have?

These have been released...

a) Dispatcher's statement.
b) Officer's statement.
c) Additional responding officer's statements.
d) Officer's body cam video.
e) Neighboring witness statements stating that as seen on the video, the deceased was the knife wielding aggressor.

...and...

f) The foster mom's statement that the deceased was a peaceful person, and maybe she was prior to her becoming an enraged violent knife wielding felon attacking unarmed people, but she certainly wasn't when the officer arrived on scene?

How many more facts are needed aside from toxicology?

White boy with a borrowed AR shooting three individuals after traveling across state lines, illegally possessing the firearm. Receives a bottle of water and a pat in the back from the police.

Black girl on her own property defending herself with a ktchen knife, the only weapon available to her, against multiple assailants. Shot dead in the back.

If one simply “considers the facts” without figuring in unconscious bias in the split second decisions of the police officers, one is indeed color-blind in a country steeped in systemic racism.

Sorry, bias doesn't win legal or moral arguments...

When the officer arrived the deceased girl and a guy with her were clearly the aggressors, and if the knife wielding aggressor wasn't shot in the back a unarmed girl would've been stabbed, this much is on video for all to see, and if you can't see it then that's your bias. The guy with her was attempting to take the first attempted stabbing victim's head off while she was on the ground with a round/front kick, while the deceased went for the other girl.

So, a man and a knife wielding woman going after two unarmed women, out on the sidewalk for all to see, is a fair fight to you? The man obeyed the officer's commands to stop and didn't get shot, the knife wielding woman did not and did, end of story.

BTW, a large percentage of domestic stabbings and murders are done with "kitchen knives", which is a weapon of opportunity.

Everyone except the family and some in the MSM agrees with the obvious video evidence, and AGAIN, what happened prior to the officer's arrival makes no difference as to the officer's actions. He saw multiple felonies being committed by two aggressors, with one armed and intent on killing or creating great bodily injury with a knife, the other attempting to create great bodily injury via a front/round kick to the head, and when his verbal commands had no effect on the knife wielding woman he ended the threat, end of story.

Again, for those pulling the race card whenever a person of color is shot by police, regardless of the evidence that's unique to every case, you're doing the BLM movement no favors. Save it for when it's obvious racism or skin color was a factor, and when the police are clearly in the wrong, and there are no lack of deserving cases unfortunately, though this is NOT one of them.

Video of it all, from a neighbor's house, who also admits the officer did the only thing he could do to protect the unarmed civilians. Note how fast everything unfolded, and how at first the officer was paying attention to the man who was trying to take the women on the ground's head off, a women who fell avoiding the initial knife attack by the deceased, and then the officer had just a second or two to defend the women in pink from the knife wielding attacker, back from his position by the women on the ground.

Also note the officer was alone at the time, with backup just arriving but not in a position to help.

Personally I think we should have an emergency “health type” first responders that go to domestic type calls first with police to follow as back up or if called in by the first responder. If police show up first they will do exactly what this one did. Or perhaps firemen with a hose would work better than the police. At any rate what we are doing is not working. I will also note our police are the least trained when compared to some other countries. Here it’s weeks in some countries it’s up to four years of education and training that is in essence college level.

There needs to be a better way to respond and disarm if needed.

In CA some cities are experimenting with MH teams of clinicians and EMTs.
Many cities are moving ahead already. San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced last month that trained, unarmed professionals will soon replace police officers in responding to noncriminal crises involving people who are homeless or have mental illness, among others.

Last week, Oakland’s City Council voted to fund a $1.35 million pilot program that will send emergency medical technicians and trained counselors to respond to non-violent calls.

Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg has pledged to reallocate some police resources so that non-law-enforcement personnel can respond to such calls.

The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to have the city develop a model for unarmed crisis response that would divert nonviolent calls for service away from the police department.

This month, the Federal Communications Commission is scheduled to designate a three-digit number, 988, to reach the National Suicide Prevention Hotline.

Not only does Ohio have a Castle doctrine, the duty to retreat was repealed effective this month, and knives are only considered weapons if used as weapons.

There is a non-zero chance that this case could be moved out of Columbus and I'm on call. Would rather not disqualify myself, so I'm avoiding the video, news reports, and public comment otherwise. CPDs reputation concerning use of force against Black Ohioans is public record.

If the combatants are already engaged with knives, it is too late for counseling . If weapons are already being used, talk won't work. And police have a duty to be involved. You have all read or heard about knife vs gun at close range, and nobody including the cops are paid enough to get fillayed. An enraged 15 year old girl can kill you just as quickly and completely as a trained navy Seal. A cop who does nothing is crucified as thoroughly as a cop who shoots.
