"Best New Shotgun": Mossberg 590M

2018 NASGW: Mossberg 590M Wins Best New Shotgun
When it was introduced earlier this year, the Mossberg 590M magazine-fed 12-gauge shotgun sent ripples throughout the industry. In July 2018, the 590M was highlighted as NRA Gun of the Week (watch the video above). And, it's still making waves, receiving the "Best New Shotgun" Caliber Award at the annual NASGW (National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers) Expo earlier this month at the NASGW awards reception and dinner. The Caliber Awards are given out by NASGW in conjunction with the Professional Outdoor Media Association.

For the 590M, Mossberg built upon the proven pump-action platform the company is known for, modifying the 590 Shockwave receiver to accept detachable box magazines holding five, 10, 15 or 20 rounds of 12-gauge ammunition. The 590M is the world's first double-stack shotgun magazine which features integral stabilizing ribs that engage the magazine directly to notches engineered into the receiver. Mossberg worked with Adaptive Tactical to engineer the magazine-fed 590M. The 590M mag-fed pump-action 12-gauge shotgun retails for $721.

Mossberg is no stranger to winning awards at NASGW. In 2017, they won a Caliber Award for "Best New Overall Product" for the 590 Shockwave, considered one of the most innovative pump-action shotguns released that year.

I bought the Mossberg Shockwave when they first came out with only the 12 ga. Now they have so many options it is even better. I think this is possibly the best Ideal gun for home defense.

Mag fed shotguns have a big advantage - fast reloads.

One downside - you cannot plug in a slug (assuming you have a mag full of shot) if needed.

I feel like this is going to devolve into a revolver versus mag-fed situation. The love of semi-auto mag-fed pistols might make people think they actually need these (and the expensive mags). When does a 12 gauge not hold enough shells?

Besides the cool factor, what is the problem they are trying to solve? Just curious.

There was a loss of prestige as shotguns used to be the number 1 home defender until rifles with high cap mags became widespread. It's mostly a sales thing I think. The main beneficiaries of this kind of shotgun would probably be people running 3-gun, more so after this is adapted to semi-auto shotguns. The magazines are functional, but hella ugly. If anything, they should use the better magazines to develop a new generation of inertia/blowback driven semi auto shotguns that offer a superior shooting experience to your traditional 12 gauge pump, benelli semi autos, saiga 12s, and similar weapons.

Thinking about it more though, using detachable magazines makes it a lot easier to change out loads for different targets. Not really an issue for most people, but it would be good for police to be able to load a mag with breacher shells, drop mag, and get out the buckshot. Also, it means you can have a small magazine for your birdshot and a large mag for your buckshot for states that have magazine limits on hunting without having to mess with plugs and extension tubes. None of this is exactly hard with what we have now, but it would be much faster with detachable magazines. Also, you can mark your magazines for what you have in them and load the whole box instead of one round at a time.

At the moment, it's an idea that has potential, but someone really needs to take it and run with it and come up with new ideas that make this useful instead of just a novelty. Shotguns as a whole need modernization and innovation for military, police, and action sports shooting if they are to ever get out of the niche support role they have fallen into.
