Voting can matter in a red state

Our GOP-controlled county is a majority-minority county. For the first time, the entire county government flipped from all white GOP to diverse Democrats. It happened in one fell swoop in November. Our new sheriff didn't forget who voted for him.

t was an issue Democrat Keybo Taylor campaigned on and within just hours of taking office on January 1, he ended the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office's relationship with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's 287(g) program.

"As the sheriff of Gwinnett County, today is the official ending to our office's participation in the 287(g) program with ICE," Sheriff Taylor said during a news conference Friday morning.

“We knew we were going to smash things up pretty good," said Bianca Keaton, chair of the county’s Democratic party. “We made history everywhere.”

In addition to the change in party, many of the Democratic winners are decades younger than the elected officials they’re replacing. And every one of them is Black.

He is a local cop. First Black Sergeant in the county PD. First Black Sheriff of the county. He ran in Georgia against law 'n' order SWAT guys and good ol' boys. He ran on ending 287g and mental health treatment versus locking up the mentally ill and addicted. The voters liked that.

Keybo first joined the force in 1983 spending time in both Gwinnett’s Criminal Investigation Division and Special Investigations Section. In 1994, he was assigned to the FBI Drug Task Force before being promoted to the rank of Sargent in 1995. His 1995 promotion to the rank of Sergeant made him the first African American to ever be promoted to such a rank in the history of the Gwinnett Police Department.

By 2000, Keybo was promoted to Lieutenant and Unit Commander of the Gwinnett County Drug Task Force. In 2007, he achieved the rank of Major and oversaw the East and South Gwinnett Police precincts.

He brings a lot of experience to the job. Since you have a county sheriff and county police, does the sheriff just run the jails and maintain security for the courts?

I guess it is like most highly populated metro counties. Jails, courts, writs, and help with patrolling unincorporated areas. This county population grew like crazy in the past decades.

BTW, aside from essentially flipping the county government, we also are one of the few Congressional districts (GA-07) in the US to flip red to blue in 2020. I think we did almost everything we set out to do in this county. Now... let's see if we can overcome all odds and help flip another three offices on Tuesday. If not, we are getting ready for 2022 and the governor's race.
