Anti-impeachment Democrat looking at switching to Republican Party after fierce lobbying by Trump

On Saturday, the Washington Post reported that Rep. Jeff Van Drew (D-NJ), one of just two House Democrats to vote against opening a formal impeachment investigation, met with President Donald Trump on Friday, where the president personally urged him to defect to the Republican Party.

Van Drew, one of the most conservative members of the Democratic caucus, has made no decisions yet but is reportedly considering the offer seriously. This comes after denying he was considering such a switch on Tuesday, saying, “I’m not changing anything — just doing my job.”

His spokeswoman declined to comment.

Van Drew’s district, in the southern tip of New Jersey, is highly conservative. He won control of the district in 2018, after longtime incumbent Republican Frank LoBiondo retired. The GOP’s candidate to hold the district, Seth Grossman, imploded spectacularly after a series of racist comments about African-Americans and Muslims were made public, after which the National Republican Congressional Committee pulled its endorsement.

Then they need another Dem to run against him in 2020 after Trump craters.

Time for NJ Indivisible District 2 to go into action! Get all the Dem voters who elected Van Drew to turn on him!

They already have turned on him. He was being primaried and would have lost, so he went to kneel before Trump.

That district was going to flip anyway. He is going to lie about it and run as a GOP. It is a 60% GOP district, so the flip was a fluke of a racist GOP candidate losing in 2018.

Of course, the GOP voters may not like this guy either.

Checking with my Indivisible chapter about it (I'm in D-11, not District 2).

I guess he was going to lose his Dem primary, anyway, and he ran as a Dem for the job & pay, not for the constituents.

I expect that District to flip back red, but it will be replaced with my district and others flipping blue. :)

Party labels are almost meaningless in this country. Michael Bloomberg was a Democrat when he wanted to run for mayor of NYC, there were too many Democrats already running so he became of Republican, years later he changed to Independent and finally back to Democrat. The current governor of West Virginia Jim Justice was a Republican, he switched to Democrat to defeat the Republican governor. Then he switched back to Republican. Bernie Sanders is technically an Independent in the US Senate, but he's running for the Democratic presidential nomination.

I think party labels are meaningful in some ways. For example, I won't research a GOP primary candidate much except to get a sense of where they came from (politician, wealthy business owner, inherited wealth). I won't vote for GOP here. Ever. They lost all credibility long ago.

5 of Van Drew's staff immediately quit en masse, with one resignation letter for all of them. They didn't sign up to work for a ReTrumplican. Meanwhile his CoS remains.

Interesting story overall. He thinks he can run as GOP but the GOP there asked how stupid he thinks voters are. Three other GOP candidates in that race and he ran a nasty race against the GOP last time. No one wants him except his chief of staff, I guess.

She's the only one. Two more staff members resigned leaving Allison Murphy as his sole staff member in Washington. She has resigned her NJ state Democratic Party seat, and it's not clear if she's switching parties as well.
Nancy Pelosi has been working hard to prevent incumbents from being primaried, but in Van Drew's case, that's clearly over. She'll be happy to see him primaried by his new party! And now the Dem nomination is open again in District 2.

The Fox GOP has its minions screaming and waving signs at various town halls. They project what they fear the most. If these "moderate" Dems do what they were sent to do, they will vote for impeachment. If they don't, the GOP wins or they will lose in primaries.

The GOP has been wiped out in most elections since 2016, yet they still use the same playbook. Stay strong.
