Trump is preparing to release his Middle East peace plan, will brief Israel’s Netanyahu in Washington, Pence says

JERUSALEM-- President Trump is preparing to release his long-awaited Middle East peace plan this spring and will discuss details of it in Washington next week with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his challenger in upcoming elections, Benny Gantz, Vice President Pence announced Thursday.

Pence met here with the embattled longtime Israeli leader and his lesser-known rival, and invited both to the White House for a preview of the plan, which was finished last year but kept under wraps amid political turmoil in Israel.

No details of the package were released Thursday.

The Trump administration last year released proposals for a massive international investment effort in the Palestinian territories and elsewhere.

But the admnistration has held back the politically sensitive elements of the plan so as not to appear to interfere in Israeli elections, even as the White House took other actions seen as beneficial to Netanyahu. With Israel now preparing for its third election inside a year, U.S. officials decided to release the plan and let events take their course, regional diplomats and former U.S. officials said.

The effort led by Trump son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner began in the first months of Trump’s presidency. It was undertaken in contrast to what Trump dismissed as the endless circular discussions about peace under previous administrations and a hallmark of the new administration’s business-focused approach to foreign policy.

Hopes for what has come to be known in the Middle East as Trump’s “Deal of the Century” are small. Palestinians have rejected the plan sight-unseen as a sop to U.S. ally Israel, and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was not invited to Washington.

If it is as described in the past, they are just promising a ton of money to Palestinian leaders to shut up and do whatever the USA wants. Palestinians were never part of the discussion, so they know it is just a big bribe to be a puppet government. That would probably put Palestinian leaders lives in danger if they were stupid enough to agree.

Amazing that it took this long - until just before the election - to announce "Middle East Peace!" at rallies. I guess NK peace didn't work out?

Article was updated:
Trump told an audience of conservative Jewish supporters in December that he had been advised that achieving peace between Israel and the Palestinians would be the hardest task he faced as president but that he and Kushner were trying.

“If Jared Kushner can’t do it, it can’t be done,” Trump said then.
The White House has developed the plan with almost no input from the Palestinian side of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, now in its eighth decade.
Al-Aloul said overtures from the administration had grown more frequent in recent weeks, including at least ten invitations to discuss the plan delivered by European intermediaries. The Palestinians rebuffed them all he said. “They want to be able to say that they have our input,” he said. “But [Trump] is not doing this to help us, but to help his friend Netanyahu in his campaign.”

BiBi thought it was great. The Palestinian’s forget it.
Palestinian leaders on Tuesday rejected US President Donald Trump’s peace proposal as an unacceptable capitulation to Israel that tramples on the long-standing aspirations of their people.

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas vowed the initiative unveiled in Washington would fail.

“This conspiracy deal will not pass. Our people will take it to the dustbin of history,” he said after a meeting in the West Bank city of Ramallah of various Palestinian factions including Islamist group Hamas, which pledged to “resist the deal in all its forms”.

Trump’s proposal included a long list of measures directly in line with Israeli interests, notably recognition of Jerusalem as the “undivided capital” of the Jewish state.

“If Jerusalem is not the capital of the Palestinian state, how will we accept that?” Abbas asked, stressing that it was “impossible for any child, Arab, Muslim or Christian,” to do so.

Senior Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya said the Islamist group which controls Gaza would never “accept any substitute for Jerusalem as the capital of the Palestinian state”.

“We warn the whole world not to go along with this deal,” he said.

Trump’s plan triggered immediate condemnation on the streets of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, with demonstrations expected to continue through the week.

Thirteen people were wounded in the West Bank in clashes with the Israeli army on Tuesday, the Red Crescent said.

One person was taken to hospital after being hit with a rubber bullet, while 12 others were suffering from exposure to tear gas, a spokeswoman said.

An AFP reporter said around 200 Palestinians confronted Israeli forces near Ramallah, burning photos of Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

I’m sure that Trump will put the blame on the Palestinians not one the fact the “Peace” plan was a gift to the Israeli government with loses to the Palestinians.

GOP and Likud are hailing this peace plan as the greatest (bigly) peace plan of all time. Everyone else is wrong, they say. They will soon equate Democrats with Palestinians and call both terrorists.

Oddly, BiBi and Trump are both facing elections soon. It's almost like this is a planned political stunt (e.g. Pence walks out of a football game).

As one side of the dispute rejected a White House plan it condemned as hopelessly biased, the other raced to lock down the territorial prizes the plan offered. This ensured that the proffered deal could have permanent consequences even if, as many analysts predict, it will go nowhere during its self-imposed four-year window.

Even before the parties had finished poring over the map that described a possible Palestinian state on 70 percent of the West Bank, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made clear he would immediately take steps to annex the other 30 percent, the location of more than 150 Jewish settlements, along with the Jordan Valley.

However, on Wednesday morning, Tourism Minister Yariv Levin, who accompanied Netanyahu to Washington, told an Israeli radio station that because of formal procedures, this process could be delayed.
Muhammad al-Burai, an idled teacher, watched them, lamenting all that the proposal would take away from his beleaguered people. “The plan tells us that there is no Jerusalem, no return of refugees, no control of borders, no airport or seaport, the settlements have become legitimate, the martyrs and the detainees have become criminals, and all this for $50 billion” in promised investment funding, he said. “Is there a sane person who accepts this?”

Israeli settlers were also sorting through the deal’s particulars, with mixed responses. They stood to achieve a long-cherished dream of having their hilltop towns and cities become normalized Israeli communities — patrolled by police instead of soldiers — but many balked at the price: a four-year freeze on building and the prospect of a Palestinian state.

“That’s a big no,” said David Haivri, a longtime resident of Kfar Tapuach, an Orthodox Jewish settlement of 1,500 people north of Jerusalem. “We are a thriving community, and we need to grow. To ask us to not be alive, even for a short period and certainly for four years, we cannot accept that.”
For liberal Israelis, any relief that the concept of a two-state solution might endure — with the unexpected endorsement of a future Palestine by both Trump and Netanyahu — was overshadowed by the restrictions the plan would impose.

“The usage of the word ‘state’ in the context of this plan is beyond cynical,” said Hagai El-Ad, executive director of the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem.“This is not a plan for Palestinian rights nor a state, except for the permanent state of apartheid.”
Some of the Palestinians’ Arab neighbors in the region, however, were not so quick to reject the Trump plan outright. Jordan and Turkey roundly condemned the proposal, and in Lebanon, the Iranian-allied Hezbollah movement vowed to “topple” what it called the “deal of shame.”

But others were more supportive, notably Egypt and the Arab states of the Persian Gulf that have drifted closer to normalized relations with Israel out of shifting strategic interests and years of peace-process stagnation. Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry tweeted a thank you for Trump’s efforts “to develop a comprehensive peace plan between the Palestinian and Israeli sides,” and the United Arab Emirates described it as “a serious initiative that addresses many issues raised over the years.”

Oman, Bahrain and the UAE sent representatives to the White House for the plan’s release.

It sets a precedent, send in settlers and you can eventually annex territory. I'm against anything imposed. This will help Bibi in the March election but probably not enough to win.

Looking at the response from the surrounding Arab nations (Sunni), it appears that though they have differences with Israel, Israel does represent stability and rule of law where the various Palestinian factions have been fighting for decades and there are numerous Palestinian refugee camps with revolutionaries some Iranian backed. And Israel supports the Sunni Arabs in their fight against Iran (Shia) and we don't know what mutual assistance goes on behind the scenes.

It was designed to protect Bibi, allow Trump to say (to Sheldon Adelson) that he's "protecting" Israel. It is deliberately DESIGNED to fail and be rejected by the Palestinians (assuming Jared is clever enough to do so) giving Bibi and the Orange Stain cover.

It is fundamentally unworkable.

Good plan for all involved except Palestinians. Not sure which is worse - being a fourth class citizen in your own nation or non-existent in current Limboland.

Seeing the world as it is, seems only the weak and indefensible countries continually get screwed over. It's no wonder they all want nukes.
