Help identify old rifle

A buddy pulled this out of storage, it's been there for a long time. We think it might be a Mosin Nagant. Caliber is right, it was made in the USSR in 1932. It's rusty on the outside, but it's more superficial than the pics make it look. Barrel still has peaks and valleys. Looks like maybe it was shortened at some point. We will try to clean this up.

Yep. Likely a cut down Mosin Nagant m91 or m91/30, caliber 7.62x54r. If you show a pic of the top of the receiver we can see what the arsenal is. I see what might be part of USSR, and that may indicate a 91/30 used in the Spanish Civil War. Need that close up.

So, it's an m91 from the Tula arsenal. If also you could get a pic of the USSR in English letters that we see some of above, we could determine other things about it. Clearly it has been cut down and sporterized. If the receiver and bolt clean up nicely it will be a good project rifle. If the barrel is still good, it will shoot fine. Problem with projects is the 7.62x54r is a rimmed cartridge, so making anything other than like a .30-30 with it will require a new bolt face. Not impossible, but pricey. Awaiting the pic.

Lots of Mosin Nagant parts are available out there. On a crusty rifle like that you'll want to check the magazine spring and the trigger spring. That's a great m91 rear sight on there. Hopefully the spring in it is still good, as those springs are tough to find.
