my experience with thermold m1a magazines

when i bought poly, the polytech commie chinese m14 clone, she came with a 5-round (unknown manufacture) and a 20-round (checkmate)steel magazine. so right away i ordered 4 poly(!)mer 20 rounders by thermold, https://thermoldmagazines.com/m-14-m1a/ because i have six thermold 30-rounders for my AR, and they've been flawless in the AR (as have my 6 orelites).
and the m14/m1A mags have always loaded and fed flawlessly too, but...
maybe because they're polymer, and a tiny bit thicker, they don't insert in the magwell smoothly. the m14-style mags "rock in" front-to back, and are all a bit awkward, but the thermolds have been more so, stiffer to insert into the magwell. and since the edges where the catch engages seem a bit rounder, lock-in is not always positive.
overall they've worked great: clean, quiet, reliable once you get them locked in. adequate if fussy for range trips, i would be unable to recommend them for any high-stress use, and when i get more magazines for this type of rifle, they will almost certainly be checkmates https://checkmatemagazines.com/product/ ... -magazine/, which from what i've seen, has been as near perfect as an m14 magazine can be.
