i believe (no real reason, but) most of this stuff comes out of sweatshops in india (or indianapolis) where english is not the first language and a dollar is a lot of money. i don't mind those folks having food on their tables, but they don't need to be cluttering up LGC in the process.

most of the time i don't think we're looking at bots.

:yahoo: my guess (just a guess, because of the screen name) that vertexplussingapore is a failed attempt to place links in sig or homepage. that's three this morning. the day is young.

But no links in the signature or website profile? Checking to make sure the new anti-spam settings worked.

Well good. Looks like that may have solved at least one issue. Weirdly it was already supposed to be disabled for newly registered users, but apparently the use of "never" means no, and no doesn't mean anything to the forum software.

nothing definitive, but new member vertexplus looks familiar and has set my spidey-sense all a-tingle. i think the recent countermeasures are working.

googled vertex plus. IT company in jaipur, rajasthan, india.
here's a look inside.
https://www.indeed.co.in/cmp/Vertexplus ... J%2FJaipur
those glorious-looking salaries? rupees. 71+ to the dollar. i hope it's cheap to live in india.
AND... they have SEO specialists, though they're toward the low end of the salary scale.
which makes sense. they're just grunts in the army of evil.

interesting what you can find on the web.

Then there are ones like Wisdomseeker that don’t care to intro...

And that one that linked their blog and never intro’d.

so far as i know there's no requirement for an intro, but if you're going to claim credentials and involve yourself in controversial topics i'd like to know more about who you claim to be. it would help to understand the poster's perspective.

i believe some of what we're seeing is evidence that the measures you've taken are working. some of these iffy logins are frustrated attempts to place spammy sigs and website links. you're forcing them to actually post, which hopefully costs them more time and money.

to all the guests and new members reading this (yes, we can see you), i would like to say that if you intend to be a member who contributes meaningfully or even if you just plan to lurk and read and learn, you are very welcome. if i wrongly suggest that you are a troll or spammer, i profusely apologize. if so, PM a moderator and make your case, and enjoy the forum. post an intro thread. contrarywise, if i'm not mistaken, i'm fresh out of sympathy.

There’s a sticky on it.

I’d say it’s between highly recommend, highly advised and mandatory.
Another way to look at it. If you manage to get into an argument or express a controversial opinion or start criticizing forum member comments in your first few posts. I will look for your intro.

It doesn't say it's mandatory, so as far as I'm concerned it isn't. We shouldn't be pouncing on new people for not posting an intro thread unless we actually change the rules.

We can certainly encourage people to post an intro, but please, let's be polite about it. Ask them to do so, don't demand it. It's like the old saying: you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.
