Greetings from Texas

I’ve been shooting since I was a young kid and been around guns all my life. I grew up for the most part in Boulder, CO which if you don’t know it is a really liberal town. I went to college in Nebraska where I did a fair amount of skeet/trap shooting and bird hunting. After college I served for 11 years as a Marine Officer including tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, moving to the Dallas area in 2012 when I got out for the jobs. Needless to say I was a bit overwhelmed by the overt racism, homophobia, and gullibility of my neighbors on a variety of issues. I’d all but given up shooting for multiple reasons including: not preferring AR platforms nor am I impressed by your ability to shoot a 8x8 group from 25 yards, the overall white supremacist company at the range (too many 88s and other such signs), and not wanting to get into the discussions about Muslims or Obama or the right wing rage du jour when dudes sidle up to me at the range. Though I may bring the last one on myself with my Obama 2012 sticker on my ammo can. It sucks because I’ve always liked guns but very much like many veteran’s organizations the company is lacking if you’re not in lock step with their BS. Why can’t a fella like guys, public education, and guns?

This is especially a drag since I’ve wanted to start hunting. My wife and I have recently been talking about more ethical ways to consume meat mainly for the treatment of the animals in the factory farm settings. They’ve made big strides in pasture raised meats but what’s lived a better life than a game animal that’s allowed to run free? The problem is meeting people that I want to spend hours or days in close quarters with, that know what they’re doing. I’ve always wanted to hunt but my dad didn’t have much interest in it after he came back from Vietnam. So I’m book worming my way through various volumes but there’s really no substitute for a good mentor.

I found this group when doing some research about liberal pro gun groups. I truly think that guns are the issue that will win some of the south back to the left because, while anecdotal, many of my conversations with other Texans go fine until guns come up. Then it’s the “all democrats are gun grabbers” propaganda that has been pushed for so long. Don’t get me wrong liberals don’t do themselves any favors when it comes to their complete ignorance of guns but the prevailing slippery slope argument that any gun control measures WILL lead to confiscation is preposterous when any critical thought is applied to the logistics of it. There’s a large space for candidate education when it comes to guns/gun policy and it all starts with finding like minded gun owners. Sorry for the rambles, it’s just nice to have found a place to get this out.

Welcome! A good friend of mine is a liberal ex-Marine--they do exist, they just tend to keep it to themselves! Sorry I can't help you on Texas, all my Texas family is the kind you are describing. But welcome from The Home of the Devil Massachusetts!

Hi! You might be surprised at the overwhelmingly large number of red hats at suburban ranges here in NJ. You won't see "88" or other nazi codes they think we're too stupid to understand like "14", "18" or combinations of them. As if they are so fucking clever!

But one difference is nobody ever comes up to me to start a political discussion even when shooting with someone wearing or carrying some overtly liberal insignia. People do seem to be overly polite and accommodating at the ranges I go to--after all, most are armed. At one range, every RSO is armed and wearing a vest.

Welcome from Houston! We've got a lot of active members in Texas and have range meet ups a few times a year.

Howdy from Seattle!

I grew up in Littleton and lived in Boulder for eight years. Miss the weather and the nighthawks on summer evenings.

Ah, Plano. Nice area.

Anyway, I don't know about TX member meet ups or areas. I'm fairly new myself. I believe there's a subfolder for Texas members but I can't find it. I could be wrong, but I think the TX subfolder administrator has to first give you permission to access it. I don't know who that may be or how to access it if true, though. I assume if true, the TX subfolder may have info on meet ups, if any.

Buenos!

Lemme know if you get into wild pig hunting in TX. Open season on them all year ‘round and no limits. Good source of ethical and healthy meats for your freezer (based on what I’ve heard). Would like to get into it myself though the pigs haven’t come strong into the deserts of SE AZ (yet).

There is a Texas subforum, as well as subforums for other regions and other topics specific to the club. However, not only does the Texas subforum require you to be added to it by the admin (Simmer Down) you now also have to be a paid member of the LGC to see it. That's a recent change that some people don't know about yet.

The only hunting I have ever done where I felt the prey had a good chance of wining over the predator. The adrenaline rush of a boar coming at you is very similar to jumping out of a C-130 with a parachute strapped on.

Oh, the meat is actually really tasty.

Also, WELCOME from the Free State of Nevada. (I went boar hunting in Georgia).

Although I’ve gone pig hunting for meat here in Texas, I’ve never been rushed by a boar nor have I ever jumped out of an airplane. I can imagine both can be an adrenaline rush! Speaking of getting rushed by a boar, something similar happened to the guide and another hunter during a night stalk hunt at Boar Creek Ranch about a couple hours southeast of Dallas. The guide and hunter had shot it at least 10 times, but it kept coming after them. They finally put it down but were pretty shaken up from the experience. I was in a blind several hundred yards away when it happened and found out about it afterwards. Anyway, I highly recommend Boar Creek Ranch to the OP if he’s looking to harvest some wild pork meat. It’s a bit pricey, though, but I think most private leased hunts in Texas are that way after having priced them out.

Welcome from Baton Rouge, OldBiff. The more I get around, the more left-leaning former marines I meet. One of my volunteers at a museum in PA was a retired Marine Colonel and I was amazed at how progressive he was and how disgusted he was with the vitriol from the right toward Obama. This is a safe place. Not that we need one, really. After all, we are all heeled! LOL.

I believe now after our recent forum changes a membership is required to access the Texas forum. It’s my intention to give a shoutout in the range report section prior to an event and on FB. Joining is always a good option.

Welcome from Houston!
