Wyoming legislature passes hunting bills

Changes Coming for Wyoming Hunters After Legislative Session
Wyoming hunters may be affected by new bills which were passed by our state legislature.

The new bills will enforce changes to game and fish rules including hunting color updates to florescent pink.

Game and fish license expiration dates will now be managed by the Fish and Game Commissioners instead of Wyoming’s legislature and commissioners are now only allowed to issue up to 160 antelope hunting license licenses a year.

A bit more information.
The 2018 Wyoming Legislature passed several bills that will make changes to Wyoming Game and Fish Department laws and regulations. Many of the bills could also have an impact on the public, according to the Game and Fish.
Hunting in fluorescent pink, Senate File 61: The new law allows for hunters to wear either fluorescent pink or fluorescent orange while hunting outside of a special archery season. Guidance on how to wear the new fluorescent pink will be available on the Game and Fish website. The Game and Fish Commission will update regulations to align with this change, which will include a public comment period, but the department is planning to make this change effective for the 2018 fall hunting season.

Can this be legal?
• Yellowstone wildlife conservation fee, House Joint Resolution 5: This joint resolution requests the U.S. secretary of the interior and the director of the National Park Service to enter into an agreement with of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho to impose a wildlife conservation fee at Yellowstone National Park. The resolution asks that the agreement include a provision directing the revenue collected from the fee be transferred back to these states for wildlife conservation efforts.

Is it legal to ask the Federal government to impose a fee to be used for conservation efforts? Um, yes. Yes it is. Why do you even ask?

I ask because this has the appearance of a state telling the .gov to impose a fee and then telling them what to spend it on. I thought it was the federal House's responsibility to do budget stuff. This seems like an attempt to circumvent the federal budget process.

As long as the House (and Senate and President) agree with the suggestion then it will become law. If any of them disagree then it fails. This is nothing more than the state lobbying the Federal government, which happens all the time.

That number seems low by a factor of about a hundred. Wyoming brags of having more pronghorn then the rest of North America put together.

Last year this says they had 115 hunt areas, and glancing down the list it looks like an average of 200 tags per area (for residents) wouldn't be far off. Maybe this year the average is 160 per area? I doubt that's really the right answer.

When I hunted there, which admittedly was long, long ago, they were virtually begging us to buy tags for second animals. The last year we went, you could buy three tags. We drove back to Denver with with at least one carcass per person. The only people who were even shooting after about 9 AM of the second day were one guy's two brothers who came from another state and really hadn't done their homework. They missed so much they were borrowing ammo on Sunday afternoon!

Unfortunately, the population is not what it once was, but they still have a few thousand to spare.
