A new reloader, one of my staff members at the range

1
You all know by now that not only do I enjoy reloading, but I also advocate it highly to others. Here is today's story about the latter.

There's a young fellow in his early 20's, a Jewish fellow, who due to running into some anti-Semitic, possibly violent, people a couple of years ago, started exercising his 2A rights. He does wear the yamulke. He'd been asking me about reloading for some months now, and he recently bought one of my long-distance rifles in .308 Winchester (a Remington 700) and is loving it. He fully intends to shoot it at 1,000 yards and is planning to take the BangSteel 1,000 yard course once the temperature warms up.

Problem: .308 Win match ammo is E-X-P-E-N-S-I-V-E.

So, as part of the rifle purchase, he also bought my little Lee Reloader Press. Gave him a good price on it, too. He has already ordered the Lee Ultimate Die set, which has both sizer dies (full-length and Collet neck-sizing), bullet seater, and Factory Crimp Die. For match bullets that have cannelures, the Factory Crimp Die will do pretty well for him. He is now ordering the various reloading components. That particular rifle seems to like the Hornady 178gr Match BTHP bullets and A-MAX bullets, and he's been made aware of this.

Since we work at a gun range, once-fired .308 Win brass is available to us. All he's gotta do is go through the brass buckets before or after work, because people do bring in their M1A's and LR-308's to shoot. They usually buy our ammo, which means he'll end up with largely same brand, same lot brass. Good stuff for him.

Now that I've recovered my Web site from that Internet censorship problem, those videos are now all back up there. Every one of 'em. And there are more coming as soon as I upgrade my computer to process 1920x1080 video. Just got the parts for it this weekend; it's gonna be a pretty nice build, naturally running a GNU/Linux distro.

This young fellow, BTW, knows of my Web site and has been studying the videos. The whole point is to get those who can to consider the hobby. And that goes *ESPECIALLY* for residents of states like California where they have that ridiculous FFL-like "mommy, may I?" process for buying ammo. Every last Californian who enjoys firearms marksmanship should invest in a Lee Turret Press of some sort (mine is the Classic Turret) since they're so affordable.

Oh, he let me know yesterday at work that his .308 Win dies have come in. He also has Modern Reloading, 2nd Edition and is studying it. He will also be buying the Lee New Auto-Prime to seat his primers. He's gettin' there.

And finally...turns out he leans Liberal! :-)

Large rifle primers are out there; it's just a matter of keeping your eyes open. You'll find 'em.

I agree. Hornady's reloading manual says that the .308 Win is to the rifleman like the .38 Special is to the handgunner, and that's a fair assessment. The cast bullet rifle loads in Lee's Modern Reloading demonstrates that flexibility very well.

BTW, there are several rounds that could fit that bill. The .308's military predecessor, the .30-06, is one. Both are fantastic, very flexible cartridges.

He now has close to an ammo can full of .308 Win brass, which he will be separating by headstamp. He already has deprimed and cleaned them. Atta boy.

He is aware of the challenges in finding large rifle primers. However, fortunately, powder is available, and he's aware of this. He is continuing to study Modern Reloading when his other studies allow.

I'll be checking out your reloading videos soon as the work slows down which seems like never. Got all the works ready to go. Another problem is I've not had time to hit the range and make reloading brass. I have a few hundred rounds though.

What more could I need? Maybe some .303 British.
Mine 7.62x53R(54R), 30-06, 308 and one .22LR. 12ga shotguns too. I suspect I might end up with an intermediate caliber rifle. I don’t anticipate too many other calibers unless one of my grail guns drops in my lap.

Still waiting for my Mosin bolt handle to come back from Jim the Boltman. When it does, that rifle uses a new 0.308" barrel. This means it effectively is a new recreation, functionally, of the Finnish Mosin M27 rifle with the spirit of the M39, so as to better use 0.308" match and hunting bullets. The rifle definitely will be a handloader's proposition. "Could" I fire 0.310" 7.62x54R rounds in it? Probably. But that's not the point of this rifle. The point of this rifle is to create a Mosin build that can shoot as precisely as I can reasonably afford, while keeping the basic Finnish M39 spirit. Got components all ready to go to develop the right load when the newly modified bolt handle arrives.

The above mentioned staffer, who also likes Mosins, is already thinking about reloading 7.62x54R. However, he's still learning how to reload .308 Win for now, and that experience will serve him well for the Russian cartridge, too.

Yes, I remember when you mentioned this rifle, and I also remember when those machine gun barrels were being sold. Thought about it at the time, but I didn't yet know enough about Mosins.

According to Jim The Boltman, they should be going out this Monday. Looking forward to developing loads for this rifle.
