Shopping: something for mice and rats

1
I've glanced around at the sporting good store sites, Pyramid Air, nameless reviews, etc and realized I don't know squat about air guns outside of the posted price.

I'm not looking for Olympic grade equipment. Something that will do a one-shot on a rat from 15-20 yards. Ideally, something that doesn't look like an evil assault rifle. Something that doesn't sound like a gun going off. Surely, something for $100 or less.

I see a Crosman 177 pistol for about $55 around here.

Will this last more than a weekend?

Gas piston vs spring?
Benjamin rifles with pistons look Plain Jane, not scary.

Gamo? Hatsan?

177? 22?

The Crosman American my dad bought me 30 years ago still works. Not sure how sturdy the new ones are.

This version is a tad nicer looking, but I don't think the furniture is real wood like mine: http://www.crosman.com/american-classic-pump-pistol-177

.22 ...if possible. Solid hits = more humane.
Go on youtube and check out the vids of "pro" pest-controlers. I believe almost all use .22 caliber.

This guy in these vid sounds like he's hosting of a golf tournament:

Nitro pistons are more refined, transmit less noise down the stock when you fire. But springs guns work just fine.

maybe a mouse/ rat extermination device. They come with this cool carrier system so you can use it in any room, even take to friends and families homes so they can use them. And they are cheap too !

The Gamo I got is now up and running in rat mode. Check its thread, as I got a new air rifle scope for it.

Haven't made a pic with the new scope yet, but it shoots very consistent groups at compost pile distances, say, 20 meters. Single shot break open, sort of slow to load pellets, but as long as you're not in a hurry, it works.

For the population I have I think the Crosman American Classic would be the dollar investment. This summer I've been putting out rat bait and spent about the same amount and still have a trickling stream of mice and rats.

The Benjamin rifle looks simple, has good reviews, but is more than I thought I'd spend.

The old dog that chased squirrels died. This dog is disinterested in squirrels so I've been feeding them in this area. It's a regular squirrel circus and they come when I whistle for them.

Big block party and mice and rats start showing up. Dog still doesn't care. Squirrels initially not into sharing but adjust. If it wasn't for the diseases I'd be more open minded but I prefer for them to go.

Rat bait seems more of an appetizer and a ten dollar bag of poison can disappear overnight.

Now I see snakes poking around the shadows. I assume the mice are on the menu. I can hear red tailed hawks screeching but the squirrels no longer scatter at the sound.

What next?

Stop feeding them. When cats are fat n happy,, they wont go after mice. But the side effect of hunger is they go after everything. Rats, mice, birds, bunnies, etc...

I second Dandad's suggestion. In fact, I'd go to the local shelter and "borrow" some of their cats. Meaner the better, so you won't feel bad leaving them outside at night and not feeding them.

They might be hard to hit with a pellet pistol. But if you go that route, make sure it has a rifled barrel. Some of the newer guns are cheap because they skip that step and assume smaller kids are happy if they hit the tin can.

I picked up a Crosman 2100 for $55 at Scheels and mounted a $8 scope on it. I over pump it to 20 and use Gamo rocket pellets to take out rabbits at 25-30 yards. I'd pump it less and use regular pellets or BBs for something that small.

Buy this. It is slightly above your budget but I'm pretty sure you can dig around and find the extra thirty bucks.

Also buy this:

And a can or two of these:
