Gads...stress, anger, division, etc., lots of guns 'out there'.

What to do? Can't expect LE to be everywhere or even show up quickly.

Train, get a CCWP if you can. Carry a reliable, comfortable, effective HG everyday you can. Recognize the YUGE responsibility of doing such. Protect yourself and 'yours'...

Stressful times for sure..

400 people shot is like saying 400 people involved in auto accidents, there is no context. Is there a news source? As YT mentioned, what is the geographic context, people shot doesn't mean killed same with auto accidents. Who did the shootings, perps or police? Not enough information. How does last weekend differ from other weekends in the past?

Similar to emotion inducing clickbait numbers thrown around by the anti-gun groups.

Yep, the talking heads on CNN lamented it last night. No mention of the rather unprecedented economic, social and stress ripples of the pandemic, just guns are bad and there are so many of them. The rise in violence (if it is indeed a rise--hard to tell) is indicative of stressors in society. But we will once again miss the forest for the trees as we focus on gun control rather than a fracturing society.

John Brunner's "Stand On Zanzibar" was prescient.

"'Mucker' is a word coined by the science fiction writer John Brunner in his great novel Stand on Zanzibar. The word derives from 'amok,'' which will require a bit of history. It is a Malay word, and a person who goes violently insane, rushing through the village and murderously attacking everyone in his path, is said to have 'run amok.'

In what was an egregiously idiotic statement, even for him, the eminent French critic Georges Bataille called running amok the purest manifestation of revolt, 'the movement by which man rises up against his own condition and the whole of creation.' (Bataille never ran through the streets of Montparnasse madly slashing with a kris, so he either lacked the courage of his convictions or was a hypocrite with a small - a very small - modicum of brains.) The Malays, inevitably, were and are more sensible: they kill those who run amok.

A 'mucker,' then, is someone who runs amok; the times havin' a-changed, now they use guns. As always, they are people driven to murderous madness by intolerable frustration, repression and conformity, whether in an isolated kampong or the Postal Service. So far muckers seem to have been mostly Americans, but just the other day the radio carried news of one in Germany.

It does Mr. Brunner's prescience great credit to have foreseen the need for this word, back in 1964; and it does the rest of us no credit at all, for letting such a word be needed."

Interesting and much depends on how the media reports these events especially in totalitarian countries and if it's hyped.

CNN as the source of the "400" explains a lot, they have an anti-gun agenda.

Two guidelines I use from that Active Self Protection guy.

1. Stay away from stupid people, doing stupid things, in stupid places, at stupid times. (now substitute stupid with crazy, or dangerous.)

2. get you ego out of the situation

Are they counting suicides? Without context or sources, it is a "fact" no more factual than a tweet from our former president

Saw a piece of a headline containing "CNN," "10 mass shootings," and "weekend" yesterday and assumed it was misconstrued and/or out-of-context information for the purpose of promoting a CNN broadcast segment. It was a good reminder of why I don't go out of my way to attempt to get news from an advocacy organization.

We had two cops shot and one suspect shot while attempting to serve a warrant yesterday across the street from me. I assume that will be termed a mass shooting now.

That's terrible, I see one of the cops died the other will recover and the perp was killed. Highway stops, domestic violence and warrants are probably the riskiest.

It was a knock warrant. Suspect did not answer. They knocked down the door and he opened fire. One officer dead, another wounded. Suspect was wounded and later shot himself.

Looking at CDC data for 2018, last year available, total gun deaths in the US averaged 105 per day, 67 of them suicides.

Recent work argues an average of 329 people are shot every day in the US, including suicide and accidental discharge. Two out of three survive.
Firearm injury is a major public health crisis in the United States. In 2017, more than 39,000 deaths were caused by firearms, but the incidence of cases in which people survive after a trip to the emergency department, known as cases of nonfatal injuries, has not been well established. Therefore, it has proven elusive to answer this simple question: “What is the total number of cases of firearm injury per year in the U.S.?”

A new study by a team of researchers in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health expands research on trends of fatal and nonfatal firearm injuries in the U.S.. Their findings, published today in JAMA Internal Medicine, show that between 2009-2017, there has been an average of 120,232 firearm injuries each year, or 329 per day, and that cases of nonfatal injury are twice as prevalent as deaths from firearms. The study signifies the importance of evaluating the impact of firearm prevention policies and strategies not just on injuries that ultimately result in death, but also the more common cases in which people survive after emergency care.

Context is important. 400 people getting shot on a weekend is well below average. It's still far too many. But suicide prevention is far higher on the list of useful mitigation strategies than some other proposals.
