DA investigation into Santa Clara County Sheriff's CCWs for Campaign Donations

Post by CasualObserver »

New developments. DA has scheduled a news conference tomorrow, Friday Aug 7. Stay tuned.

Word on the street was that getting a CCW in this county was (next to) impossible. The data suggests it is possible, for a price.

"An NBC Bay Area investigation found donors to Sheriff Smith's campaigns were about 14 times more likely to receive a concealed gun permit between 2014-2018 than applicants who did not contribute."

A spokesperson for District Attorney Jeff Rosen said only that a news conference is scheduled Friday to "announce the results of an ongoing investigation."
Sheriffs and DAs are dependent on each other, I'm interested in what he's concluded. Plenty of male sheriffs are doing it. We need a "shall issue" process in CA, not "may issue".

This just in...
A sheriff's captain is among four people indicted by a grand jury on felony bribery and conspiracy charges in a campaign scandal tied to Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith, the District Attorney's Office said Friday
Rosen said there were two paths when it came to the issuing of concealed gun permits by the Sheriff's office: One for average citizens and one for campaign donors and VIPs. Whether applicants received a permit depended on which group they belonged to.
Sheriff Smith herself was not among those indicted Friday, but Rosen said his office's investigation is wide ranging and far from over.

Cui bono? (who benefits) Unless Jensen was skimming off it, the sheriff's reelection campaign was mostly benefiting. We'd have to see the indictments.
