A sling can help you a lot, steadying the rifle. I would encourage you to look into "Hasty" technique sling use, even if you are using just a strap connected fore & aft.

It is nice to have something you can adjust quickly. There is a type of sling that I have seen from several vendors which is about ideal for Hasty sling use:

Uncle Mike's used to make the same sling in thin leather, good for a small carbine. Brownells still makes it in wide, thick leather as their "Latino" sling, but they make it out of Top Grain cowhide, not Latigo. My daughter and I made up a bunch of these slings years ago to give to relatives that were shooters.

The Ching sling is a tactical rifle sling created by Eric S. H. Ching and popularized by Jeff Cooper. The purpose of the sling is to stabilize the rifle as a shooting aid with a minimal amount of adjustment. It came with my Steyr Scout JC .308. After using it I put one on my FN SCAR 17, it's easy to learn, quick to deploy, really helps accuracy and will carry your rifle.
