bought a caldwell xla bipod for poly the m14s

Post by lurker »

i got the 6-9" model, paid full retail :wall: , looks like a good item. 259 grams.
https://www.caldwellshooting.com/rests/ ... 265_M.html
got it home and realized i had no clue how to mount it, no instructions, the GI m14 stock has a front sling swivel but not the "quick release" the xla needs, and they included a bit of plastic tube which obscured the working bits. i had to watch some videos for the"aha!" moment.
so now i need to get a replacement sling swivel stud, https://www.treelinem14.com/M14-M1A-Tre ... STFSQD.htm $15 or thereabouts. will report as and when things progress.

You may find it has a significant effect on accuracy. If it was secured to the barrel or gas cylinder, you can be sure there would be a strong effect.

considering how floppy the gas system was, i'm leery of hanging anything off the barrel or gas cylinder. i like that it attaches to the stock. i'm not sure this will mount cleanly, i may have to modify it or the sling mount. i'll keep all the original parts in case i need to go back to GI.

I have a couple of those that I use for NRL22 and PRS. They’re pretty comparable to the Harris S-BRM bipods. The TreelineM14 swivel kit should work just fine. If you have the swivel model, the pivot lock is a nice add-on. The nice thing about buying directly from the Caldwell site is that shipping is free.

good to hear, thanks. i'm planning to use this off the bench so the pivot is likely not needed... ah, heck, i had no idea what i was doing when i bought it, just that actual m14 bipods run another 30-40 bux or more, and are heavy.
seemed like a deal, as usual now i see i can find it for less. now i'll try to make it work without mucking anything up.

update:
had to file on the bipod some
LUGO1988.JPG
the QR swivel kit. the thicker W-W stock requires the longer (1/2") stud and screw

kit installed w/ GI sling swivel

bipod mounted on stock

and extended.

works just fine, attaches/detaches in seconds, holds securely, sling works just like it's designed to.
