MOA Muddle

Don't judge, but for the life of me, I can't understand MOA. I am trying to pick out a red dot and I've read a lot of stuff about it on the Internet, but the best I can figure out is that most people go for a 3 MOA. Help!

QUICK FACTS. A Minute of Angle (MOA) is an angular measurement. A MOA is 1/60th of a degree. 1 MOA spreads about 1″ per 100 yards. (actually 1.047″).
i'm retired. what's your excuse?

In terms of a red dot MOA is going to tell you how big the dot on the reticle is. So like Lurker said above a 1 MOA red dot will cover ~.5" at 50 yards, and ~1" at 100yds and so on. With red dots you generally are trying to balance visibility of the dot against how much of the target it covers. A 3 MOA red dot is a lot easier to see in sunlight than a 1 MOA dot but the 1 MOA dot will allow for more precise aiming.

For 25 yards and less, you want 6 to 8 MOA. For longer distances, you want 3 or less. It's the difference between rapid target acquisition and precision. Different gear for different applications.
