The electric grid, in general, is in poor shape. Adding new users and new climate regimes won't help it. The American Society of Civil Engineers puts out an Infrastructure Report Card. The latest national report card (2017, 2021 is due out in March) earned a whopping overall D+.

Sorry you all are having such a go with the weather. While a little "glamping" at home during a power outage can be fun, such is not the case when it's life threatening. May your coffee be hot and your toes warm.

Re: How’s the weather

Yeah, glad you have coffee. The grid will be challenged by the roll over to electric cars, so it is likely time for TX to hook into a national grid, a smart grid that pulls on all sources and distributes according to draw. By software.

Glad y'all can post. Lovely cool clear day here. Hoping for good news from TX as the sun gets higher. Hang in there.

Bummer about that cool glove.

All my Coleman stuff is OLD, like me. Requires white gas and I have none. If we lose power for any length of time, we're screwed. Only thing I have and using is my Zippo hand warmer. Power company has declared a critical Rush Hour wherein they control my thermostat until 12:45 PM to reduce power requirements. As long as we keep power, I'm ok with that. Did get in a pot of coffee this morning. Appears Thursday gonna be a bear weather wise. Will be able to cook on gas grills and bathtub full of water, but doesn't help much if no power for heat.

Woke up to zero degrees this morning. Master bath toilet water line is frozen. It is shared by an outside hose bib, that is covered. We are forecast for more snow and an ice storm tomorrow. No temp above freezing until Saturday with forecast high of 41. Had out first rolling blackout last night for 30 minutes. I'm still trying to get HomeKit devices and computers back online.

Trying to get the pipe thawed, online suggest of electric space heater in room to heat wall. Don't have one but I remembered I have a halogen work light that puts out as much heat as light. Remove anything that will burn. Put it in the WC check on it frequently and we will see.

17 hours without power. Apparently half of Houston is without electricity. Charging phone batteries in my MINI, it has heated seats. LoL. House got to 13C/55F this morning. Outside temperature was at around 10F according to news. Can’t confirm since for some reason internet cell reception was not working.

If it continues, set up shop in the smallest room in the house. Bodies will keep it warmer if the door is closed.

We’re fine regardless of the indoor temp. I got out all our Finnish winter gear that hasn’t been used in 25 years. I’m too lazy to start cooking with my camping gear. LoL.

I put a storm lantern on in the kitchen. It gives off a bit of heat.

Good to hear!

My longest power outage was 6 days (I think) during the fires in 2019. The novelty wore off pretty fucking quick! Especially when the gas was turned off and we didn't have showers for 4 of those days. But we did have coffee on the camp stove, so survived. And the house didn't burn down, so that was also a bonus. :smart:

Almost half of Austin has been without power since Sunday night. I've been lucky. My neighborhood (which doesn't have much grid redundancy and goes out with regular storms) has stayed lit. I tutor CAD/BIM for the college and have ended up having to take everyone's shifts. Pretty slow since most students are out of power. Free money for ammo.

We went without power once after a hurricane years ago. Reverse problem, needed to try to cool down. It’s not fun either way. I’m a bit more used to bare necessities having been in scouting. But, heat kills my wife, MS heat sensitive. Cold doesn’t bother us too much, proper clothing and we’re fine. I feel bad for all the people here that have no wool type clothes.

A couple of candles will help in a small room. They put off a lot of heat. Be safe doing it, but it works well.

It is still in the 20s here and the rain froze into sheets of ice. One day problem and power is on, so I have nothing to complain about (except that cold air Texas sent us).

When I first moved into this area, the power was constantly going out during high winds which blew regularly. And we get snow here. There was no wireless internet so I had to use cable which went down when the power went out and cables are also on poles. Service from any of the mobile carriers was sucky, cell towers in rural areas aren't a priority for them. Slowly over the years things have improved and utilities are more reliable.

I don't drink coffee, but hot water with some brandy or whisky warms me up.

A friend in Texas posted on FB that he was out of power for 30 hours. The other comments on that thread were INSANE--blaming Dems, Libs, Socialists, Communists for all their troubles.
Bitching that Dallas run by Democrats, had power, but they didn't!

So...Texas has had a GOP Governor for 26 years, a GOP Senate for 24 years, and a GOP House for 19 years. 19 years of total control of the State's government, yet it's the Left's fault they are having this power problem! Dallas, with its Dem govt isn't so it's all their fault!

WTF is wrong with people in Texas????

Why I hate social media, it just becomes a feeding frenzy of ignorance and emotions. FB, Twitter - all the same. Reminds me of big city Democrats blaming everything on guns - just get rid of guns and everything would be perfect for urban dwellers. Well right after I posted about coffee the generator died.

The tech got here a few minutes ago and it's feeling much better now. The whole Valley though is pretty much without power and Edinburg City water shut down. The water is back on in Edinburg now but everyone on city water is under a boil order.

For them without power that will be a challenge.

Charter/Spectrum internet still down so using my phone as a hot spot for one computer.

Sounds just like our place in Abaco. I always bring down a cellular hot-spot (Alcatel-made) because it's rare that the internet and BOTH cellular services there are down.

+9F. Yes, above zero. Sun is shining , no wind. Streets are dry and clean.
My little town has a few army surplus generators around town for utility work. The sewer lift stations and the water tower can run for a few days off the generators, and the old water pump was set up to work off a tractor power take off if needed. I do have a portable backup generator that would let me keep the gas furnace running, and a good stack of firewood if all else fails, and a pair of Coleman stoves in the root cellar/bomb shelter/storm shelter .

Still having rolling blackouts here, which I actually appreciate. My local electric provider is a co-op, not a regular corporation, and they've handled this a lot better than Reliant to the south of us (Houston proper) where they are just having long term, uncontrolled blackouts.

ERCOT is in deep shit for not having a contingency plan for this weather. Even Gov. Abbott is pissed. I expect head at ERCOT will Roll.
