To get us back on track, the gun who's history I spent the most time wondering about. Colt Lightning Rifle 38-40 caliber made approx.
1895 that was given a second set of serial numbers (in two places) and its barrel cut about 3/4 of an inch.

I cannot remember if I had posted these carry pieces here. Now that I have a good leather OWB holster, I carry them a lot more these days.

Yes it's a slide or pump action rifle
I like slide actions. (For some reason, I think of shotguns as pumps but rifles as slides. I'm sure it's not the common or correct useage, but it's stuck in my head)

Here's mine. It's a Winchester 61 made in 1936. I think it's been in my family since new.

1873 springfield trapdoor. breechloading, black powder metallic-cartridge, single shot. originally the allin conversion of the existing stocks of the 1861/1863 springfield rifled musket, sleeved down to .55, then .50 cal, the 1873 was made from scratch in .45-70.

model 1892 Krag-Jorgenson rifle. magazine-fed smokeless bolt-action rifle in the rimmed 30-40 krag cartridge. the single-lug bolt makes for very smooth operation, but would occasionally break, especially when we tried to convert them to .30-'03.
LUGO1725.JPG
the rotary magazine under and around the bolt is somewhat awkward to feed.

still, very pleasant to shoot.

yes, old rifles are like that. i like the development of the technology, it tells a story, many stories in fact.
oh, wait, you want another picture. i don't have an '03, so here's my m1917. us made, british designed, mauser-derived, served briefly during ww1, then in a rear-echelon/foreign-aid role in ww2. this one i think was a parade and ceremony rifle

m1 garand. adopted 1936, served through ww2 and korea, into the 60s with our allies. per patton, "greatest battle implement ever devised". 1st standard issue semiautomatic rifle, uses 30-06 with an 8 rd en-bloc clip.
this one's a "blue sky" korean reimport, based on an SA '42 receiver, accurate, reliable.

some people end up with 10 or 20 garands or 1903s, i wanted one of each.
i've been interested in the development of the technology in its social and tactical context since i started shooting. i saw a concise sampling in USGI main battle rifles, so i started picking them up when i came across a good example. some, i paid a fair price, some way too much, every once in a while a neglected bargain. right about 20 years of collecting. sometimes i like to speculate on what's next, maybe something in a bullpup like the tavor or AUG. i like the look of the tavor.

that's the core collection, sorry, no more main battle rifles. but then, there's this, a M&A Sales parts set on a bushy lower, built 20yrs ago for more than a new, assembled basic rifle costs. it does have a heavy barrel.
